My Laptop is Dead

I bought my red Acer Aspire 5742 laptop back in 2010 and it cost £349 with a two year security package. It had Windows 7 installed which I loved. Early last year I was persuaded to change to Windows 10 and that's when it all started to go horribly wrong. I had to have the laptop rebuilt at one stage costing £60.

Earlier today I started up my trusty friend to find the screen displaying the Windows defender screen, which then went on to say it was rebuilding the necessary files followed by a blank screen, then nothing, not a noise, nothing. I'm annoyed because there are some files I should have saved to a portable hard  drive. I'm hoping some bits are in my Microsoft Cloud.

So now the hunt is on for a new one. Hubby has said he'll buy it for me. His company have a discount with Argos of 7.5% so I'll be checking out their products, but it's a minefield. 500gb, 1TB, RAM, Celetron, Intel core, graphics cards and it goes on. This post has been written on my phone which hadn't been easy, I'll be back soon. Bye for now. Tx

  1. To me buying a laptop is a big and confusing deal. My husband always did the choosing and installing but since I am a widow I will rely on my sons. Too many choices, like you said. Nice your husband's workplace has a deal.

    1. I've just switched it on and it came on but no keyboard function. So I'm going to try again in the morning even if I can save some bits on there. I think Windows 10 has caused lots of problems for people.

  2. I just had to replace mine and I lost all the pictures I had stored on it. That won't happen again. Good luck on your search.

    1. I'm hoping it will start up and I'll use an external keyboard to save bits to a memory stick. Fingers crossed. Tx

  3. I think adding Windows 10 to an existing Windows 7 is the problem. Much better to stay with what you have installed when purchasing a computer. Your new computer will already have Windows 10 their latest update I think was April and this is surrounded in warnings to people updating an exisiting program. Nothing is simple these days! Good luck.

    1. You are so right, nothing is simple. I put a micro SD card in my phone to increase memory the other day which I was assured was simple. Was it heck as like!

  4. We usually wait until our youngest son comes home. He is our resident computer geek and really knows his stuff. However sometimes he has us buy something a bit more than we need.

Good luck finding what you need and want.

    God bless.

    1. No computer Geeks in this family unfortunately! You are blessed to have one. I dislike computer shops because they may as well be talking Mongolian!

  5. Try unplugging it and switching it off. Now remove the battery pack and press the on button. keep your finger on the on button for about ten seconds. Now put the battery pack back in, plug it in the wall and try firing it up.

    1. Thanks Cherie, I've been doing loads of Googled things. I'll keep persevering but deep down I know I need a new one.

  7. Good luck, we just tell our daughter what we need, she then decides what we should get always adding a bit more than we need. Daughter works in IT.

    1. Lucky you. I'm ok with all the geeky stuff to do with using it. I did a Microsoft course back in the late 80's. But understanding the workings is beyond me.

  8. I have a similar lap top with Windows 7 and have refused to update or add anything. Hanging on by a thread as it keeps keeping really hot round the fan. Not sure what to upgrade to.

    1. I'm going for a HP 4GB 1T laptop, I need the memory because I do but Microsoft office on it, and I use it for so many things. We are getting a deal. If this one lasts 7 years I'll be pleased plus I won't ever be persuaded to upgrade the running program!

  9. My son works in software design and he recommended HP when my laptop died. Good choice.
